Pay Attention to Pearl Shape

Pay Attention to Pearl Shape

In general, the more perfectly round a pearl is, the more valuable it will be. However, this also depends on pearl types. For South Sea and Tahitian pearls, even baroque shapes are treasured and still very valuable because of their rarity. However, the criteria with which one assesses freshwater pearls is critical.  This is because the high productivity of freshwater pearls means that the highest quality is filtered from hundreds and even thousands in a freshwater pearl harvest and to a large extent, it is shape that distinguishes quality.

Various irregular shapes of freshwater pearls are quite commonly seen in today’s pearl market, categorized by terms such as, branches, coin, cap, cross and so on. These shapes of pearls are produced in huge numbers and are much less valuable. A buyer needs to pay great attention to the roundness of the pearls if the product is stated to be or generally classified as “round”, because just a bit of off-roundness can considerably reduce the pearl value. A drop or oval shaped pearl is measured at its minimum diameter. An honest retailer will clearly state the pearl shape; pearl size information without noting pearl shape is meaningless.
